Public Security
Policing and Public Safety Reform
Vision: A safer Edmonton through modern, accountable, and community-centered policing.
Policy Priorities:
-
-
Rebalance public safety spending by investing more in services (mental health responders, social workers) alongside core policing functions.
-
Create a Civilian-Led Public Safety Division to handle wellness checks, non-violent incidents, and homelessness response — reduce inappropriate reliance and resulting burden on police.
-
Expand the EPS Community Policing Model with embedded neighborhood officers and transparent reporting on community crime statistics. Bring back the ride-along program to increase city engagement with police officers and their regular duties.
-
Establish a Public Safety Oversight Board made up of diverse community members with the power to review complaints regarding police misconduct or overreach and shape policy recommendations.
-
Invest in training and de-escalation: All police and peace officers will receive advanced training in de-escalation, anti-racism and systemic profiling education and sensitivity and awareness, and trauma-informed care.
